 In January we kitted our team of electricians out in new branded workwear and the new design and colours have been a big hit with our guys and also with our customers.
With our team expanding we have placed this week a new workwear order with the company who supplies and embroiders them - Happysmile Promotional Products. Simon and his team based in Edinburgh provide a first class service and we would certainly recommend them. 17/7/2013 New Office Team MemberWe are delighted to officially welcome a new team member to Stirling Electrical Services. Natalie Thomson has been with us for 4 months and has now been offered a permanent position within the company which she has accepted.
Natalie will play an important role within our office team and will have direct contact with many of our customers and suppliers. Welcome on board Natalie. 17/7/2013 Electrical Safety - RCD Devices Last Saturday night our emergency electrician received a call from one of our clients asking us to attend to a property in Alloa which had no power after a flood.
On arrival our electrician found that the Residual Circuit Device (RCD) within the consumer unit had tripped switching off the electricity to a number of circuits within the property. The RCD device had tripped because as it was monitoring the circuits it had sensed an imbalance between conductors due to the water ingress at a socket and had quickly and safely switched off the electricity. If no RCD device had been installed within the consumer unit then the water ingress problem would have taken longer to become noticed within the electrical system so a much longer delay would have occurred before a Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) tripped or even much longer if the circuit was protected by old style fuse wire which could potentially pose a fire risk to the property. RCD devices are now an essential part of modern electrical installations and if you do not have this device installed within your home or property then we strongly recommend that one is installed for both person and property safety. The Electrical Safety Council have published some FAQ's on RCD devices which explains more but before you visit and read their page watch the video below which highlights why RCD devices should be installed. 1/7/2013 VAT and TAXThere is an interesting article on the BBC Scotland Website today about tradesmen carrying out work without charging VAT when they should be and some customers happy to accept this.
Personally I feel this clampdown is well overdue and I welcome any moves the Scottish Building Federation and other organisations do to try and stamp out this unlawful behaviour. While there are tradesman who do not require to charge VAT because their turnover is under the current £79,000 turnover threshold there are also tradesman out there who "work the system" by making sure they stay under the threshold by allowing the customer to pay for materials or by some how splitting their turnover over different registered companies. So lets take the VAT set up a step further bringing me back round to my ultimate employer wish - if you are in business and trade then you must charge VAT, why should different companies or individuals be discriminated against just because of turnover. "You Trade You Charge VAT" and make it a level playing field it's as simple as that. Plus in doing this and raising extra VAT from the current under the threshold businesses then the UK Government could possibly afford to reduce the VAT level back down to 17.5% or even lower. We need to stop the unfair differences in the tax system which discriminates against progressive companies who are penalised against other busiensses by having to pay VAT and Employers PAYE(which is a different story you don't want to get me started on again.) |
