A tweet and phrase I came to slightly regret saying after seeing and realising the damage the rainfall and subsequent floods brought to some businesses and homes in parts of Stirling.
While "it was interesting" to be out and about during our worst flooding in many years it certainly is not how those who's properties have been affected by the water damage will feel. But as the week progressed the word "interesting" could again be used to describe our weeks weather in Stirling. 28/6/2018 Hottest Stirling Weather DayA new www.stirlingweather.co.uk record high temperature of 32.3ºC was recorded on Thursday 28th June 2018.
Our previous high temperature was 29.0ºC in July 2013. The highest all time recorded temperature in Scotland is 32.9ºC set in the Scottish Borders in 2003. 29/4/2018 Stirling MarathonCelebrating with the boys #Stirlingmarathon

I don't like taking time off - I know I must, I know I must for not only my family but also for my wellbeing. In recent years I feel that I am getting better at relaxing during the downtime and allowing my team back home to look after the day to day operations. They are more than capable and I do take heart knowing that our procedures and systems we have worked tirelessly down the years developing are now in place and being handled well. When companies get to a certain size having procedures and systems in place that help everyone understand the day to day processes is very crucual to the efficiency and consistency of the business. It's a busy period for us in the electrical and security system trade and we have many ideas and plans for the coming months that will require hard work from myself and the team but for now, for me, there's still another day to relax...the hard work of resuming running can also wait another day or two as well. I know this final day downtime will be another day invested well in myself and family. The development of the smartphone and apps over recent years has given me and other business owners the tools that at a glance an overview of certain crucial business information such as bank, accounts information and emails can be sought easily with the facility to drill down into the information if I wish but to be honest I don't go into them in depth while I'm away. Knowing the information is there if I require it is good enough. On holidays though I do tend to spend time planning my diary, todo list and note taking as ideas and problem solving can become much clearer when your away from the everyday hustle of the office. A change to a slower pace is required at times whether it is for one day or one week. Although I've started to realise this in recent times I've still a way to go and can improve to relax further. I never like taking my eye off the ball from my business life but I've believed this week off has given me the rest and boost required to tackle the upcoming next stages in my business development. #askSCOTT - Question 3 - Stirling Weather - What's it all about?Off-topic this week from the usual business related question as earlier this week because a lot of people were talking about the lack of rain in the Stirling area I was asked by a friend about my Stirling Weather service and how did it come about. It all began in 2009 when I started to record live and historical data from my weather station near the King's Park area in Stirling. It was at that time in late 2009 that our data was made available to the public via the Stirling Weather website which we published and the data was supplemented by the Weather Underground website which also stored our weather data. Over the years our weather instruments have been upgraded to near professional standard and via our website and social media pages Stirling Weather is the go to place for local weather information. See the below weblinks for useful sites and information 12/5/2017 Dry WeatherI've been contacted over the past week from viewers of my Stirling Weather service regarding the lack of rainfall in Stirling over recent weeks so I have looked back on our weather data and have produced the below figures. As it stands rain is expected late tonight(Friday 12th May) but up until end of Thursday 11th we have had 17 full consecutive days without any rainfall in recorded in Stirling. Below is the amount of rainfall recorded in Stirling city centre area between 1st April and 11th May for the past 5 years. 2017 = 5.6 mm 2016 = 84.8 mm 2015 = 114.0 mm 2014 = 149.4 mm 2013 = 116.3 mm Rainfall in Stirling city centre area between 1st January and 11th May over past 5 years.
2017 = 230.4mm 2016 = 549.9 mm 2015 = 489.0 mm 2014 = 652.5 mm 2013 = 319.3 mm 9/5/2017 Explore ScotlandWest Coast of Scotland and sunny weather - a combination worth exploring.
I'm lucky to be once again working in in the islands of Scotland this week and over the past three decades I've travelled and visited many of the islands, towns and cities in Scotland due to business, family travels or supporting Stirling Albion. If it wasn't for visiting some of these places for work or football I know I would not have naturally visited as many places. The west coast of Scotland has so much to offer and yes it's appeal is enhanced when the weather is fine and settled but if you've been thinking about visiting or know you should explore more of our homeland then don't put it off - make a plan this summer to get out and about even if it's only for a few nights or even day trips to the mainland west coast. The long summer days are energising and the sunsets are just beautiful. More of my West Coast of Scotland photos can be viewed here. 13/1/2017 Stunning West CoastI've been privileged over the past 20 years to travel to and work in the West Coast of Scotland mostly from as north as Isle of Mull / Oban down towards Isle of Bute and all in between. I don't travel as much as I used to in this area but I am just back from working this week on Isle of Bute and with wintry weather around it got me thinking about some of the photographs I have taken of the scenery and weather conditions over the years so I've had a quick look back at my archives and posted some of my favourite ones. 23/3/2016 Electrical Work on Isle of SkyeOne of our customers asked us to attend an electrical job on Isle of Skye as a last minute request so I wasn't going to turn down the chance to get out and about and away from the office for a day to take in our wonderful Scottish scenery.
Enjoy the photos of Eileen Donan Castle and the Isle of Skye. To witness the Northern Lights from Stirling on Sunday evening was a rare and spectacular experience.
Only occasionally do we get to witness the Aurora Borealis in Central Scotland and Sunday's display was worth the wait. Over on the Facebook page of my Stirling Weather service people have been sharing their photographs of the display with our 6500 viewers plus 3000 more on twitter. View the photos on Stirling Weathers Facebook page. 1/3/2016 If you use Facebook like I do for many of my business and community activities why not use the power of social media to connect and have a conversation. My new Facebook page is now live and starting to increase its profile. If Twitter is your thing then I'm also on that and you can follow me on @ScottLMcLean 4/4/2013 WeatherA few years back in December we had disruption for 2/3 days with one electrician unable to drive out of his remote home plus a number of customers postponed jobs as their streets were not accessable, apart from that we dont have many weather disruptions and as the report says the electricians just make sure we purchase the correct equipment/clothing for them.
"Electricians battle through bad weather, says Electricfix As March is named the coldest for over 60 years, Electricfix has found that just 10% of electricians resort to cancelling jobs due to weather conditions, according to insight research completed by the business in January 2013. The majority (55%) state they continue to work through any bad weather that comes their way, with a further 22% instead working a reduced schedule. Whether the forecasters predict floods, rain, snow or fog, most electricians carry on regardless, investing in appropriate clothing (31%) or stocking up essential products and tools (17%) to remain safe and comfortable while working. A key trend identified in research by Electricfix was of tradesmen working smarter during periods of extreme weather. Instead of reducing their workload, many instead choose to prioritise indoor jobs, work closer to home or build in extra time when planning their journeys to take into account any road disruptions. Staying in contact with customers, colleagues and suppliers is a key priority all year round, and even more so during bad weather. Electricians are embracing technology to help them do this, with three quarters owning a smart phone. In addition, research from Electricfix shows that electricians are using smart phones and tablets to purchase supplies for their business, with 98% planning to buy the same amount or more via these digital platforms in 2013. Sandra Everett, senior marketing manager at Electricfix, comments, “For many self-employed electricians, taking a day off due to weather just isn’t an option. For most it means a loss of earnings and letting down valuable and loyal customers. “To make sure our customers stay safe at all times, we are committed to making essential products, tools and workwear easily available to the tradesmen of Britain. We offer a quick and easy way for customers to purchase products at a time and place to fit in with their busy schedules. By simply selecting items from the catalogue, or online using our Click & Collect service, electricians can check if the products they require are in stock and then just collect them from the store five minutes later.” http://electricaltimes.co.uk/news/article.asp?articleid=7152 |
